Standardised Tests for Studying Abroad (Undergraduate Programs)

Updated: Jan 26

What Exams Do You Really Need — and What You Can Skip

Exams Don’t Decide Your Future — Planning Does

One of the first things students ask when they start thinking about studying abroad is: “Which exam should I take?”

SAT, ACT, IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo — the list feels endless. And online information often makes it worse, creating the impression that every student must take every test.

Here’s the clarity most students and parents need to hear early:

This blog focuses specifically on standardised tests required for undergraduate (UG) study abroad. Postgraduate exams like GRE, GMAT, or MBA entrance tests will be covered separately.

The reality is simple — and reassuring:

Most UG students take more exams than they actually need. The right exams depend on your course, country, and university choices, not on trends or peer pressure.

What Are Standardised Tests?

Standardised tests help universities:

  • Compare students across different education systems

  • Assess English language readiness

  • Evaluate academic aptitude (in some cases)

They broadly fall into two categories:

  1. Academic aptitude tests

  2. English language proficiency tests

Most UG applicants need one category, not both.

Academic Aptitude Tests (UG Level)

SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)

The SAT assesses:

  • Reading and writing

  • Basic mathematical reasoning

It does not test deep syllabus knowledge. It evaluates logic, comprehension, and problem-solving skills.

Where SAT is commonly used for UG admissions:

  • United States

  • Canada (select universities)

  • Some universities in Asia and Europe

2025 reality: Many universities are now SAT-optional or test-flexible.

This means:

  • SAT is not compulsory everywhere

  • Strong school grades can compensate

  • SAT can still strengthen applications for selective universities and scholarships

SAT is widely recognised globally, especially in the US and parts of Asia, but it should be taken only when it adds value to your profile.

The ACT is an alternative to the SAT and includes:

  • English

  • Math

  • Reading

  • Science reasoning

It is mainly used for UG admissions in the USA.Globally, SAT has wider acceptance than ACT, which is why most international students prefer SAT.

Students should choose SAT or ACT — not both.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

(APs are often misunderstood, so this clarity is important.)

AP exams are subject-level exams, not entrance tests.

They:

  • Showcase academic rigour

  • Strengthen applications to competitive universities

  • Can sometimes earn college credits

APs are optional, but useful for students applying to:

  • Top US universities

  • Competitive STEM, economics, or science programs

APs are not mandatory and should be taken only if aligned with school curriculum and capacity.

English Language Proficiency Tests (UG Admissions)

These tests confirm a student’s ability to study comfortably in English.

IELTS Accepted widely for UG programs in:

  • UK

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • Europe

  • USA

Often required for student visas, not just university admission.

TOEFL Commonly accepted for UG admissions in:

  • USA

  • Canada

  • Europe

Serves the same purpose as IELTS.

Duolingo English Test

An online English test accepted by many universities.

Advantages:

  • Shorter and more affordable

  • Can be taken from home

Limitations:

  • Not accepted by all universities

  • Not always accepted for visa purposes

Always verify both university and visa requirements before choosing Duolingo.

Frequently Asked Questions (UG-Focused)

Course-Specific Tests (UG) – Common Questions

Do medicine aspirants need SAT or ACT?

No.UG medicine programs abroad require specialised aptitude tests such as:

  • UCAT

  • IMAT

  • BMAT (country-specific)

English language tests are usually required.

Do engineering or computer science students need extra exams?

Usually no.Most UG engineering programs rely on:

  • Academic background

  • English proficiency

SAT may be optional, mainly in the USA.

What about law?

Some UK universities require LNAT for UG law.SAT/ACT may be optional.Law admissions focus on reading, reasoning, and writing ability, not mathematics.

Do design or arts students need tests?

No academic aptitude tests usually.Portfolios and interviews matter more.English tests may still be required.

Is SAT compulsory for UG study abroad?

No. Many universities are SAT-optional, especially outside the USA.

I’m weak in maths. Can I still apply abroad?

Yes. Many UG programs don’t require SAT, and SAT maths tests basic reasoning, not advanced maths.

Is Duolingo enough for UG admissions?

For some universities, yes.For visas, not always — this must be checked country-wise.

Should I take exams before choosing a course?

No. Choose the course and country first. Tests come later.

For UG study abroad, tests are tools — not barriers.

The right test, taken for the right reason, strengthens your application. The wrong test only adds stress, cost, and confusion.

Clarity should always come before registration.
