Medicine beyond Government Institution in India?

Updated: 7 days ago

Missed a govt MBBS seat and don't fancy an alternative like Pharmacy? You can still become a doctor — graduating from a WHO-listed, NMC-approved university abroad at half the cost of a private Indian MBBS, and return home ready to clear FMGE/NExT.

Why Indians Pick MBBS Abroad

  1. Seat crunch: 24 lakh NEET 2024 takers v 1.18 lakh MBBS seats in India.

  2. Fees gap: ₹50 L – ₹1.5 Cr in Indian private colleges v ₹15-45 L total abroad.

  3. 6-year English-medium curriculum with built-in internship (5+1) in most countries.

  4. Global exposure & option to sit USMLE/PLAB later.

NMC-Approved = Your Licence to Practise in India

The National Medical Commission (NMC) regulates all medical education for Indian citizens.

Only degrees from NMC-listed universities let you sit FMGE/NExT and register with the National Medical Commission.

Always cross-check the latest list on the NMC portal before paying any fee.

Non-NMC Routes (USA/UK/Singapore)

  • Universities like Harvard (USA), Oxford (UK), National Univ. of Singapore, or Univ. of Melbourne (Australia) are not on the NMC list.

  • They are ideal if you intend to practise or settle abroad — since they require:

  • Their own licensing exams (USMLE/PLAB/AMC), and FMGE/NExT to practise in India. If you study here you must still clear FMGE/NExT to practise in India, plus their own licensing exams (USMLE, PLAB, AMC).

Choose these only when you aim to settle in those countries.

Eligibility Checklist

  • NEET-UG 2025 qualified (mandatory for every Indian).

Cost Break-up (Illustrative: Georgia)

  • Hostel: 2 500 USD/year × 6 yrs = 15 000 USD ≈ ₹12.4 L

  • Total ≈ ₹33 L—still ₹20-30 L cheaper than an Indian private seat.
